Yesterday another country came into the real world. Argentina opened it doors to legalising civil partnerships. Argentina has made a bold statement for the rest of Latin America. It stands above the crowd and is happy to be recognised for breaking the mould. It is expected that other Latin American countries will follow their leadership.
Even though there had been a campaign by the Catholic Church earlier in the week. The government passed a bill that had 33 votes to 27. There were other groups that were against the bill, most of them said that they did not wish to discriminate. However, they wanted to make it clear that they believed that family life should have a female mother and a male farther.
Previous to the bill civil unions between gays and lesbians were legal is some states and in Buenos Aires now the bill allows the marriages to take place country wide.
The tourist industry said that this is good news for the country as Argentinas capital had already been categorised as one of the best and most helpful gay cities across Latin America.
This law will also allow gay and lesbian couples to adopt.
