How Healthy Is Canola Oil

Canola oil is basically rapeseed the seeds are used to produce edible oil that can be consumed by humans. It can only be used by humans as it has been genetically modified to reduce its toxicity. Traditional rapeseed oil contains high levels of erucic acid, which contains toxins, and can not be consumed by humans.

Canola is also known as low acid oil, as it is low in saturated fats. Several professional organisations state that the oil is beneficial to human health as it has the power to lower the risk of heart disease. The oil is cholesterol free and has a rich source of vitamin E and K.

Canola is also very cheap and so is popular with people on tight budgets,on the face of it the oil does appear to be a good all round food. However, a number of health experts are now disputing the facts about the health benefits and have started to recommend that the oil be replaced with olive oil.

So where does the consumer stand and should they continue to consume Canola oil? The oil does appear to tick all the boxes when you look at today’s health indicator’s against the oils make up for example the oil is sold as free of mono unsaturated oils and low in essential fatty acids, one of the main health measurements for oils.

At present there is no evidence that Canola oil will harm you, however, as previously stated a lot of people are beginning to look at established alternatives like olive oil.
