Is Intel catching up with smartphone technology

Technology waits for no man so the saying goes especially if you are in the computer chip market. The speed the market is moving in terms of new innovations is gone passed the speed of sound, and almost reaching the speed of light, as new inventions are being brought to the designers table on a daily basis.

One of the biggest growth markets is mobile phones specifically smart phones. It is expected that desk top computers will be replaced by lap tops, in the same way that music CD’s have almost been replaced by music downloads. Then it is expected that lap tops will be replaced by tablet based devices like the iPad. However, the ultimate gadget to replace everything is expected to be the smart phone.

Intel Corp the world s biggest manufacturer could be caught with their trousers down if they don’t get on the band wagon pretty damn quick, so say a number of top analysts, and some even think that they may just be too late.

Intel rules the world when it comes to personal computers, they own about 80 percent of the market, that means that out of every one hundred computes their chips are inside 80 of them, a huge market share.

So why cant Intel use their technology in smart phones, currently their chips use to much power, and smart phones just couldn’t be run with that technology.

Not all is lost for Intel as they have just bought part of Infineon Technologies, a German company, that makes wireless chips, for $1.4 billion. This appears to be an excellent move as the company manufactures the chips used in the iPhone, Apple Inc’s best seller.

Is Intel catching up with smartphone technology are they truly now back in the race and on course to participate in the mobile market?

At first glance it does look like they are making all the right moves. It is rumoured that they are looking to buy a number of other companies that will help them achieve their goals in the mobile market.

One example is the anticipated purchase of computer-security software maker McAfee Inc, at the moment this purchase is waiting on approvals. This acquisition would allow them to integrate security into chips made for smart phones.

The analysts on the street are split when it comes to whether Intel will be successful in the smart mobile phone market, most point to the lack of experience outside their core business. Others believe that they have brought that knowledge with them in their new acquisitions
