New Zealand struck by Earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0

New Zealand struck by Earthquake on Saturday with a magnitude of 7.0, it struck approximately 50 km to the west-northwest of Christchurch, which holds the biggest population in the area. The quake, and several aftershocks, have been recorded throughout the South Island.

Latest reports suggest that the event has not caused any known fatalities or major damage. Most of the damage reported so far has been done to homes and cars hit by fallen rubble, and many building have large cracks in the walls.

New Zealand suffers about 10,000 to 15, 000 earthquakes a year, and almost all of them are never felt, but they are recorded by seismographs. This fact although completely different can be compared to other less known facts like the fact that Great Britain sustains the greatest amount of tornadoes coverage per year – relative to the size of the country.

Sources confirm that contingency plans have been executed in response to loss of power, water being was cut off, and sewerage pipes  severed, a cleaning up process is underway.

The largest quake that hit New Zealand had a magnitude of 8.2 and occurred long ago in 1855,  a huge amount of land was affected.
