Windows 7 phone moves forward
Microsoft is a late starter in bringing out a generation smart phone to match the style and functionality of Google’s Android and Apple’s iphone’s
Their latest offering includes multi touch and media players. They have also got some of the best hardware partners on their side which includes the likes of Samsung and HTC.
Microsoft have deep pockets so the industry believes that it could catch up. Its new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system, is key to its strategy and the first breed of Windows Phone 7 devices are due to be rolled out this year, but they wont be a success unless the apps are available.
Microsoft is expected to be offering app developers a number of incentives in a bid to catch up with Apple iphone and Google Android. The incentives are said to include free handsets to allow them to test the apps, free tools and cash.
Looking at the league statistics for apps you can see that Microsoft has a challenge on its hands. Currently apps for Apple operating system is in the region of Two hundred and twenty five thousands (225,000), Google’s Android has over sixty thousand (60,000) these numbers are followed by one thousand and two hundred (1200) apps for windows.
To make an impact on the market Microsoft have to be able to offer its windows phone 7 users a huge number of apps, before the arrival of the new phones later in the year. Today in our hi-tech consumer world the majority of users are more interested in the apps, then the hardware. Your average consumer knows nothing about the technical side of the phone all they see and hear is what’s on the phone’s screen – the apps.
Developers equals more apps and more apps means more phone sales. Apple at the moment have over 40,000 developers working for them. Google has the second largest app store. They also have a very innovative web application called App Inventor which allows people with very little technical knowledge to build apps, which has been very successful.
It looks like Microsoft may have winner on its hands it just needs the apps in place before launching the phones.
